From Bay Area Funk to LA Pop Surrealism: be inspired by the artists in the Museum’s exhibition California Calling and create your own art that is inventive, eccentric and non-conformist!

Magic Makeover
December 28 – 31, 2009
9am – 3pm
Explore change as a concept in art in a variety of creative art projects inspired by the Monarch Butterfly Project video installation by Diana Thater on view at the Museum.

In the first week campers will follow the call of the exhibition California Calling and draw funky whimsical animals like Roy de Forest, collage poetically like William Dole, and pour a plaster sculpture inspired by ceramicist Peter Voulkos.
The second week leading to New Years will be all about change and transformation as our young budding artists will paint large scale self-portraits, draw cartoons, and model sculptures that are all inter-connected.
Both camps include a visit to the Santa Barbara Museum of Art.

Responding to community needs the Santa Barbara Museum of Art is now offering AfterSchool Art Classes at local school campuses. Talk to the PTA and the principal of your school! Museum Murals

While we were "building community" at ArtVenture Camp other education programs of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art were "building bridges" in the community of Santa Barbara painting and sculpting murals.

Students at Carpinteria Aliso School's Summer Academy participated in the Museum's Summer Mural Project with the guidance of SBMA Teaching Artist Susan Griffin while 3 to 5 year olds worked with Senior Teaching Artist Tina Villadolid on nature inspired ceramic tiles for a tile mural in the Storyteller Childrens' Center.

This photo assemblage project was inspired by the Santa Barbara Museum of Art’s exhibition Brett Weston: Out of the Shadow.

Most children nowadays are very comfortable using digital cameras however most have never seen a camera that uses film and and are unfamiliar with the traditional development process. For this project the teacher explained the traditional photographic process and then let them experience it first hand by using SLR film cameras after setting up shots using view finders.

On this image note the composition of semi circles (the over-all shape of the foliage, the reflection of the tree), ovals (turtle shell, rocks) and the dynamic contrast of lights and darks, with the turtle being the main focal point that dynamically directs our gaze from the busy light shapes on the left to the calmer, softer shapes on the right.

The Flying Mermaid

The Mermaid, Avalon, age 8

This amazing color pencil drawing caught my attention for its beautiful lines of the hair, the curve of the fish tail and the unusually developed perspective of the arms. After all this young artist is only 8 years old!

She drew this imaginary creature in order to sculpt a dwelling for it during Building Community camp.

iDolls

When campers are not working in one of our four art studios they may go to Luria Hall, a large communal room where a fifth art teacher offers additional, mostly self-directed art projects, games, books, and music.

The most popular project this week were the iDolls. Kids of all ages - including our teenage CITs - enjoyed sewing and decorating their whimsical creatures.

Geodesic Domes

On the first day of our Building Community camp each of our four groups worked together and constructed a Geodesic Dome after learning about circular structures in general and the history of geodesic domes and Buckminster Fuller in particular.

This group based project was designed not only as a fun way to build community among the students as they work together to create a large three dimensional structure but also to begin to understand the fundamentals of architecture and structure design.

The youngest campers attached self-portrait plates on the joints adding images of themselves to this community building as well as decoration and stability.

Plein Air Painting

The Ridley-Tree Education Center is located across from the marvelously beautiful Alice Keck Park Memorial Gardens and we like to take our campers there to draw from nature as much as possible. Here the children are actually painting on location, combining oil pastels and watercolors on gessoed masonite boards.

The Art and Nature camp finished with an Open Air Art Show displaying most of the work of the week around the patio of McCormick House.

Santa Barbara's webpage lists the following information on the park: Once the site of the elegant El Mirasol Hotel, this downtown block is often called the "crown jewel" of city parks. The park features a large botanical collection (75 different tree and plant species); koi pond; sensory garden with audio posts and interpretive Braille signs; low water-using demonstration garden; picnic areas; gazebo.

This project during our Art and Nature week combines elements of traditional landscape painting with 20th century photography. Campers saw examples of artists who have inserted themselves in their work, used their bodies as canvases in their work, or have constructed environments to be photographed as final piece of art.

After identifying the layers of space that create perspective in a landscape painting (foreground, midground, background) students chose an environment and determined their three basic compositional elements apart from themselves, ie sky, mountains, trees etc.. After painting the background on the bottom of the box they then drew, painted, and cut out various elements for the fore- and midground which were finally assembled in the painted interior of the box. Painting the face to become part of the landscape was an option that most of the campers chose to round up their facescapes.

The older students applied their own face paint in front of the mirror.
The younger students got their face painted by teachers and Counselors-in-Training.

For the final artwork campers inserted their (painted) face into the box and teachers took various photos (eyes open, eyes closed). The photos were printed on our color copier on 11x17 cardstock and displayed at the Art Show at the end of the camp.

On the day of the action painting one of our campers didn't feel that well and decided not to partake in the Pollock style painting but chose to draw in her sketchbook instead.

PS. She actually had a CIT (Counselor-in-Training) execute her painting under her directions (featured front center) - a true modern artist!

The highlight for most of our campers this week were the Jackson Pollock inspired splatter paintings. Campers worked with acrylics on large gessoed canvas pieces.

Action!

Paint was splattered, dripped, and poured to achieve a typical "all-over" composition.

Prior to painting campers developed their color palette mixing tints and shades and choosing an accent color in addition to black and white to achieve a balanced composition.

Every Tuesday we take all our campers for a walk to the Museum where we tour the galleries guided by knowledgeable docents and campers also get to draw in front of original art work.

One of our favorites projects from last summer!
After learning about Leonardo da Vinci's "Last Supper" each group created their own interpretation of it as a Tableau Vivant, designing masks, assembling outfits, painting a background a la fresco into wet plaster and then finally posing for the audience at our Friday Art Show!
